The Opportunity 
Mosaic is seeking a temporary Seed Orchard Machine Operator to work out of our Mount Newton Seed Orchard in Saanichton on Vancouver Island, BC for the upcoming spring and summer season. The position is projected to start on March 17.

The Role
Reporting to the Manager, Tree Improvement, the Seed Orchard Machine Operator will carry out tractor operation, orchard maintenance, and support a variety of tree seed production activities on our 100-acre farm.  Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Tractor operation for the purposes of mowing, spraying herbicide, mulching, and preparation of land for planting;
  • Operation of motor-manual equipment such as grass trimmers;
  • Irrigation system maintenance;
  • Mobile elevated work platform operation for tree maintenance and cone harvest; and
  • Other orchard labour as required.

Required Skills and Experience 

  • Valid BC Class 5 Drivers License or equivalent;
  • Ability to safely and effectively work in all weather conditions;
  • Strong mechanical aptitude;
  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety; and
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working both independently and collaboratively within a small team environment.

Compensation
The hourly rate for this position ranges from $25 to $30. Individual compensation is commensurate with skill, relevant experience, and education.
