Western Forest Products have a new opportunity for an HR Advisor in Campbell River on Vancouver Island, B.C.

What You’ll Do: As an HR Advisor at Western Forest Products (WFP), you’ll have the opportunity to deliver a full suite of HR services, acting as the primary point of contact for employees and leaders within our Timberlands operations. Reporting to the HR Business Partner of Timberlands, you will serve as an advisor to the business, leveraging your strong initiative and execution skills. Success in this role will be driven through a collaborative partnership with the operations team, union partners, the HR corporate team, and a people-oriented approach. The Advisor will have a special focus on Labour Relations, spending a substantial portion of time conducting investigations and completing preparatory work for grievance handling and arbitrations.

Who You Are: You come with 5 years’ experience in HR with a post-secondary degree in HR or equivalent, including Labour Relations experience. You are the right person for this role if you are eager to continue learning and growing, not afraid to challenge the status quo, relationship-focused, adaptable, flexible to change, and operationally minded in your HR practice. Background in Forestry or Manufacturing industries is a plus!

Work Environment: This role is to be performed out of Campbell River, B.C and will be required to travel to our Timberlands operations on Vancouver Island as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with operational leadership in executing HR initiatives to align with corporate and business unit goals and ensure a productive and engaged workforce;
  • Provide day to day advice, counsel and guidance to operational leadership on all matters of disciplinary and operational issues to ensure fair, consistent and legally defensible treatment of employees; manage grievance process;
  • Understand the WFP business, both strategically and operationally, as well as the relevant business drivers and associated HR requirements for the execution of programs and management of talent – this may include, but is not limited to:
    • Labour Relations
    • Performance management;
    • Employee relations;
    • Succession planning;
    • Recruitment;
    • Onboarding and off-boarding;
    • Policy development & application; and
    • Learning, training, and development.
  • Resolve employee relations issues, conduct investigations, and recommend and implement corrective actions when required;
  • Participate in the preparation for arbitrations, assist in the grievance process, maintaining the tracking system and related reporting and interpret and advise on language in Collective Agreements;
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with the human resources, learning and development, and talent management teams;
  • Coach and advise operational leadership and employees on HR related topics as required, including education on corporate policies for increasing overall organizational capabilities and individual performance;
  • Recommend best practices, review policies, handbook, and practices to maintain compliance, monitor regulatory changes and adopt all updates, and make recommendations for improvement;
  • Plan and direct employee engagement events to promote a high-performing, inclusive, and mission-driven culture;
  • Coordinate and implement various onboarding and off-boarding tasks;
  • Ensure data integrity and monthly and quarterly reporting through HRIS Administration;
  • Participate in developing and streamlining policy and procedures;
  • Keep apprised of industry trends and legislation changes; and
  • Perform other related duties as required or requested.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Post-secondary degree in human resources or equivalent in relevant business discipline;
  • CPHR designation and/or actively pursuing designation preferred;
  • 5+ years’ progressive HR experience;
  • Experience of progressive Labour Relations or Human Resources experience;
  • Experience working in Forestry, Manufacturing or another related industry would be considered an asset.

  • Willing to travel regularly to support HR presence in all Timberlands operations across Northern Vancouver Island and as required for corporate meetings in Nanaimo and Vancouver, British Columbia;
  • Ability to address, manage and resolve conflict in the workplace, demonstrating strong negotiation skills;

  • Strong working knowledge of labour relations, talent management, succession management, performance management as well as compensation and benefits;
